Richard White teaches in the Department of History at the University of Sydney, in Australian history, as well as the history of travel and tourism. His current projects include studies of overland journeys between Europe and Australia, twentieth century Australian tourism in Britain, recreation in national parks and Œhistory tourism‚ in Australia. His books include Inventing Australia: Images and Identity 1688-1980 (1981), The Oxford Book of Australian Travel Writing (co-edited with Ros Pesman and David Walker, 1996) and On Holidays: A History of Getting Away in Australia (2005) and in 2007 he edited a special issue of Studies in Travel Writing on Australia.
