Shelley Baranowski is professor of history at the University of Akron, Akron, Ohio, USA. She has published extensively in the field of modern German history, particularly the Weimar Republic and National Socialism. In recent years, she has worked extensively in the comparative history of travel and tourism, as well as on the National Socialist leisure-time organization (Kraft durch Freude). She has recently held a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Relevant publications include: "Strength through Joy: Mass Tourism and Consumerism in the Third Reich" (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2004, paperback edition 2007), and "Being Elsewhere: Tourism, Consumer Culture, and Identity in Modern Europe and North America", Shelley Baranowski and Ellen Furlough, eds. (Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press, 2001).
